Canadaiagua Parents Assured About Safety of Artificial Turf5

Parents in Canadaigua, New York have been assured by school district officials that a proposed synthetic grass field for athletic use would be as safe for their children to play on as a natural grass field. The Rochester Democrat & Chronicle reports that at a meeting at the Canadaigua Academy on December 7, landscape architect Cory Jenner told board members and parents that information on the New York State Health Department website shows that there is no long-term risks of switching< span> to fake grass.

Local residents are slated to vote on a $10 million capital works project on January 25, 2011. Some residents had expressed concern about health issues relating to the in-fill used in synthetic lawns. However, Jenner assured attendees at the meeting that synthetic grass will not create run-off into the town’s water supply or pose a risk to children who play on it.

John Johnson, a local resident who coaches lacrosse at St. John Fisher College, spoke in favor of installing an artificial turf playing field based on his experiences with an artificial turf surface at his school.
