Convenient Ways Of Shifting An Outlet

When you bring a new electronic device, you need an outlet for that to give the power supply. In case the outlet is already installed at that place then you can easily use that but if there is no outlet at that place then you need to install a new outlet or move an old unused outlet to that location.

With the help of a drywall or keyhole saw, Phillips and flat head screwdrivers, cut-in electrical box, 12×3 electrical wiring, wire nuts, blank electrical plate, drill, 1 inch paddle bit, side cutting pliers and wire strippers you can easily shift an outlet.

You must know that before starting any electrical installation or repair, you should stop the flow of current in that particular circuit. Hence, switch off the circuit breaker connected to that outlet. To ensure that current is not flowing anymore, use a volt meter.

You need to make a cut where you will be installing your new electrical box. So with the help of electrical box make the marks from where you need to cut and use a keyhole or drywall saw to solve your purpose.

To avoid the wastage of old wires, you can use them in new outlet connection. Extend the old wires to new electrical box fitting either through attic or through the basement. The wires might be short in length to reach till new electrical box, so in that case attach a new wire to the old wire to increase its length.

Fix the cut-in electrical box on the wall where you want new outlet. Tighten the 2 Phillips head screws on each corner until it grasps the drywall completely. Once the wire has reached near new outlet location, pull the wire through one of the wire feeds in the electrical box.

Now connect the wires to the outlet. Connect the black wire to the copper or hot screw, the white wire should be connected to the silver or neutral screw and the ground wire should be connected to the green or ground screw. Screw outlet into the cut-in box using the Philips screws which held it into the previous electrical box. Finally put the cover plate over the outlet.

Screw the blank plate into the old electrical box using the supplied flat head screws and check by switching on the power supply. If the new outlet is working fine, your work is successfully done.
